Starting first year- Freshers Advice, before you arrive
So you've gotten the grades and you're going to uni now, if your anything like me you're going to be worrying about a million and one things but I'm here to help ease some of this.
Social
The number 1 piece of advice I would give is to try and make a few friends before you get to uni. There are apps such as Campus Society that has freshers from all across the UK where you can discuss uni life. Or you can go on Facebook, search for your uni and there's bound to be loads of freshers groups for you to join. I even reactivated my Facebook just to do this and it really paid off for me. Not only do you find out about some of the freshers events early which you can get a discount on, you can also join group chats for your subject and for your hall.
A lot of people actually post which flat they are in on these groups and this is a good opportunity to get to know your flatmates before uni begins and will help you to feel a little bit less nervous on your first day. I met one of my flatmates on Facebook and we ending up talking on Whatsapp until uni started, we are now really good friends and it was good to know at least I would get along with one flatmate.
Another thing you can do is look on social media, mostly Twitter but on Instagram as well for some of the societies that your uni has, often they will have group chats. So you can get to know some people with similar interests. For me, I randomly saw there was an ACS society group chat on Twitter and decided to join. This was a really good decision for me because most of my friends from uni were from this group chat and it made the transition into uni a lot smoother.
Room
Once you find out which accommodation you will be in, go on your uni's website and look for the interactive map, this will allow you to see a 3D version of what your room will be like. You should also pay close attention and write down what is included in your room so you don't waste money getting things you already have. I know that you will want to make your room feel like home, but you don't need to splurge out and buy a bunch of new stuff because I guarantee you won't ever use half of it and when your moving out of your first year accomodation you'll be thinking to yoursekf why did I even bring this.
Everyone tends to overpack, because they are afraid to forget anything but don't worry if you don't have your 16 piece pan set when you move in as you can always buy more stuff that you need when you get there.
