my friend the runaway

When I was younger I used to go to a youth club and I did a days work experience there where I met this girl who I'll call 'K'. Me and K quickly became best friends and we went to this youth club every week. One week K didn't turn up and I didn't think anything of it, it was unusual but I just thought maybe she was ill or just tired. It was getting to the end of the youth club and K's mum turns up, frantically asking people if they've seen her. K's mum was very strict and barely let her daughter go anywhere and she also worked at K's school so she never got to do much, because of this I didn't take her serious at first when she said K was missing. As she'd start panicking if her daughter didn't message her every half an hour.

Often before the youth club K would meet up with this guy she was seeing but she'd either tell me about it beforehand or she'd only be a little bit late to the youth club. I thought she probably just went out somewhere and used this as a cover so I was going to cover for her. I tried calling this girl so many times but I got no answer, so I had to tell her I wasn't sure where she was.

Her mum started making a scene and hyperventilating, screaming where is my daughter so some of the leaders took her outside so she could get some fresh air. Meanwhile I'm still thinking maybe I can cover for this girl so I'm belling down her line, messaging her on facebook, texting her, trying to find out where she is before her mum kills her. When this doesn't work I go outside to see what is happening with her mum. She looks possessed at this point and is saying "I can't live without my daughter". So she runs into the road right in front of a car. Luckily it's late at night so there weren't many cars about and this one manages to swerve out the way and doesn't hit her.

Some of the male youth leaders rush out into the road and drag her back to the pavement and pin her down while she's thrashing all over the place trying to run back and get hit. The other youth leaders are trying to cover the door so the kids can't see what's happening and sent everyone home early. I wait around for a bit to see if she'll turn up but then the police come and I get sent home. That night I couldn't sleep and I kept trying to get in contact with K to find out what happened and see if she's okay but I couldn't get through to her.

The next day I bump into my youth leader and I ask her if she's heard anything about the K situation. She then tells me that she went to K's house earlier today because she was back home and wanted to find out what happened. Apparently K lost track of time and was walking towards the youth club with this boy when her mum saw her. Knowing that her mum was going to kill her she ran away with this boy and stayed at his house for the weekend. But this didn't explain why her mum tried to get run over when she saw her daughter, she was acting as if she just went missing out of nowhere. That's how I know her mum was really crazy.

Anyway I knew her mum would take away her phone and deactivate her facebook and I thought at least she's safe but I won't get to see her for at least a few weeks because she'd be grounded. But her mum banned her from ever going to the youth club again so I never got to see my best friend again. Even though I only knew her for about 7 months we were really close and I still sometimes wonder if my life would be different had that day not happened.
